Reflex and Trendflex Oscillators: Novel Zero-Lag Indicators

John Ehlers introduced two indicators aimed at reducing lag in market analysis: the Reflex indicator and its companion, the Trendflex oscillator.

The Reflex Indicator

The Reflex indicator is designed to synchronize with the cycle component in price data, enabling signal generation without undue delay. It utilizes a SuperSmoother algorithm to smooth the data and calculate the slope over a specified length, assumed to represent the cycle period. By summing the differences between the smoothed data and its lagged values, the Reflex indicator aims to capture the cyclic component.

The Trendflex Oscillator

Complementing the Reflex indicator, the Trendflex oscillator focuses on retaining the trend component of market data. It calculates the sum of differences between the smoothed data and its lagged values, thereby capturing the trend component.

These indicators, while promising, should be approached with caution, as there is no certainty in trading. However, they can serve as valuable tools for traders seeking to minimize lag in their analysis and make more informed decisions.

Those two indicators can be combined to become a tool that with an assumed position in a cycle, the trader can look up the trend and decide on market entry or exit.

Reflex and Trendflex Oscillators Key Features

The Reflex and Trendflex indicators for NinjaTrader 8 offer several customizable features:

• Reflex Oscillator Display: The Reflex oscillator can be displayed with the option to color it based on the oscillation direction, providing visual cues for potential reversals.
• Trendflex Oscillator Display: The Trendflex oscillator can be displayed with the option to color it, enhancing visual analysis of the trend component.
• Trendflex Signal Curve: A signal curve can be displayed for the Trendflex oscillator, with the option to shade the area between the signal curve and the oscillator, highlighting potential trading opportunities.
• Smoothing Period: The internal smoothing period for the Trendflex oscillator can be adjusted by the user, allowing for customization based on individual trading preferences and market conditions.
