The Onset Trend Detector (OTD) indicator for NinjaTrader is a trend-following technical indicator designed by John F. Ehlers., created to minimize the lag typically associated with moving averages. It achieves this through a non-linear quotient transform. The indicator integrates two of Ehlers' previous works: the Super Smoother Filter and the Roofing Filter, both enhanced to form a more complex system for trend analysis.

The OTD begins by applying the Roofing Filter to the input data, eliminating cyclic components longer than 100 bars (a default value that can be customized). It then uses the Super Smoother Filter to reduce noise by filtering out cycles shorter than 10 bars (also customizable). After filtering out both noise and spectral dilation, the system applies an automatic gain control algorithm, which normalizes the data based on peak values. The final output uses a K coefficient in the quotient transform, with values ranging from -1 to +1, to control how the ratio is transformed. An uptrend is indicated by values around 1, while values around -1 suggest a downtrend.

This version incorporates the instantaneous trendline detector, which utilizes alpha, a smoothing factor, for its calculations. This refinement can lead to smoother trends, adding more context for understanding market behavior. Peaks around 1 or -1 can indicate a market top, providing a potential signal for market analysis.
