Introduction to Jurik Moving Average

Introduced by Mark Jurik, the Jurik Moving Average (JMA) for NinjaTrader is an adaptive moving average that aims to reduce lag and noise inherent in standard moving averages by evaluating phase and volatility of the historical price movement. The Jurik Moving Average is useful for traders who require a balance between responsiveness and smoothness in their technical analysis. By minimizing lag and adapting to market volatility, the JMA provides a clearer picture of the market's direction. However, as with all moving averages, there are always limitations when the market is in consolidation mode, and therefore, an understanding of the market structure before committing into a trade is essential.

Key Features of Jurik Moving Average

The algorithm used to calculate the Jurik moving average is based on a reveal posted here. Customization options have been added to allow the user a bit more flexibility:

1. Data Input Source
  • Purpose: Choose the type of price data (like close, high, low, etc.) that the JMA will use for its calculations.
  • Benefit: Allows you to select the price data that best suits your trading strategy.
2. Period
  • Purpose: Set the number of bars the JMA will consider when calculating the moving average.
  • Benefit: Controls the sensitivity of the JMA—shorter periods for quick trends, longer periods for broader trends.
3. Phase
  • Purpose: Adjusts how the JMA reacts to price changes, either leading (positive) or lagging (negative) the market.
  • Benefit: Helps you fine-tune the indicator’s responsiveness to market movements.
4. Jurik Volatility Averaging
  • Purpose: Select the method used to average price volatility, which affects the smoothness and responsiveness of the bands around the JMA.
  • Benefit: Customize how the JMA adapts to market volatility, making it more or less responsive based on your needs.
5. Volatility Average Length
  • Purpose: Set the lookback period for averaging price volatility.
  • Benefit: Adjusts how the indicator responds to changes in market volatility.
6. Enable Trend
  • Purpose: Display trend colors on the JMA line to indicate bullish or bearish trends.
  • Benefit: Quickly visualize the market trend direction on your chart.
7. Enable Bands
  • Purpose: Display upper and lower bands around the JMA, which can serve as support and resistance levels.
  • Benefit: Helps identify potential entry and exit points by observing how price interacts with these bands.
8. Bands as ATR
  • Purpose: Choose whether to calculate the bands based on the Average True Range (ATR), a measure of market volatility.
  • Benefit: Provides a more dynamic band calculation that adapts to market volatility.
9. ATR Multiplier
  • Purpose: Set the multiplier for the ATR when using it to calculate the bands.
  • Benefit: Fine-tunes the width of the bands to match your trading style and the market’s volatility.
10. Bull Trend and Bear Trend Colors
  • Purpose: Customize the colors used to represent bullish and bearish trends on the JMA line.
  • Benefit: Enhances visual clarity, making it easier to identify trends at a glance.
